As it happened
As it happened: Sunderland v Newcastle, Premier League
It may not have the glamour of El Clasico or the title implications of the Manchester derby but when Newcastle and Sunderland go head to head there are always fireworks.
WE WERE LIVE from the Tyne-Wear derby as Sunderland hosted Newcastle in the Premier League.
As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the game. Was it a sending off? Did Sunderland deserve their luck at the end? E-mail steven@thescore.ie, tweet @thescore_ie, post a message to our Facebook wall, or leave a comment below.
Result: Sunderland 1 – 1 Newcastle
21 Oct 2012
1:21PM
With just 15 minutes to go until kick off, we have the team news:
The good news for the home side is that Irish international James McClean has shaken off a groin injury and lines up from the start of today’s game.
21 Oct 2012
1:25PM
My favourite statistic heading into today’s game is that, in the combined 13 games these two teams have played this season, just three players – Fletcher, Ba and Ben Arfa – have hit the net.
Sunderland are slight favourites with the bookies, but I’d love to know how you think the game will go.
Feel free to share your predictions in the comments below.
21 Oct 2012
1:32PM
And the game kicks off with Sunderland playing from left to right and Newcastle in the glow-in-the-dark jerseys.
Newcastle win the games first corner after less than a minute but fail to make anything from the set-piece
21 Oct 2012
1:34PM
GOAL: Yohan Cabaye, 2 mins
After Sunderland squander possession, Newcastle pounce with a well-worked team goal.
Frenchman Yohan Cabaye gets the games first goal and ensures the long tradition of the Tyne-Wear derby not finishing 0-0.
21 Oct 2012
1:37PM
It’s the kind of frantic start you expect from a derby game here but Sunderland really have been wasteful in possession.
Danny Rose was sloppy in giving the ball away in the run up to Newcastle’s opener and, time after time, Sunderland players are failing to pick out their own men.
21 Oct 2012
1:42PM
After ten minutes have flown past here in the Stadium of Light, it’s fair to say that it’s the away team that have settled into their stride best.
Sunderland’s best option looks to be Adam Johnson but every time he picks up the ball he’s surrounded by two or three of those ultra-bright Newcastle shirts.
21 Oct 2012
1:47PM
Steven Fletcher has a half chance for Sunderland after Danny Rose sends a good cross in his direction.
However, Newcastle captain Coloccini is first to the ball and deals with the threat comfortably.
Rose is involved again just seconds later, winning a free kick off Ben Arfa which Seb Larsson took from the left-hand side of the Newcastle area.
However, Tim Krul dealt with it easily at his near post.
21 Oct 2012
1:52PM
At the other end, Seb Larsson gives away a free kick which the goal-scorer Yohan Cabaye strikes brilliantly from fully 40 yards, forcing Sunderland’s ‘keeper into making the save.
After twenty minutes it really is all Newcastle. Sunderland would do well to remember this is an early kick-off.
21 Oct 2012
1:57PM
RED CARD: Tiote. 24 mins
Cheick Tiote gets his marching orders for leaving his foot in on a 50-50 challenge with Steven Fletcher and, yet, the referee Martin Atkinson gives the free kick to Newcastle.
21 Oct 2012
2:04PM
Sunderland have their first chance since the sending off but Adam Johnson spends so long trying to move the ball onto his left foot that the Newcastle defenders close down the angle and he can only send his shot wide.
21 Oct 2012
2:09PM
Sunderland win a free kick just outside the Newcastle penalty area. There’s a big shout for a handball but the ball hit the Newcastle defender’s hip and sails wide for a corner. The corner itself comes to nothing.
SUBSTITUTION: Perch for Ameobi
Newcastle realise that Sunderland are coming back into the game since the dismissal and bring on James Perch to replace Shola Ameobi in an effort to shore up their defences. Ameobi walks straight down the tunnel.

Also, does Tiote have the most pointless shin pads of all time?
21 Oct 2012
2:17PM
James McClean wins a Sunderland corner deep into first half stoppage time but Tim Krul deals with the resulting cross handily.
21 Oct 2012
2:20PM
We’ve reached half-time at the Stadium of Light and Sunderland have been their own worst enemies in this game so far.
The home team have given the ball away just too many times, including for Newcastle’s goal.
However, the sending off has swung momentum in their favour but it remains to be seen if they can take advantage in the second half.
21 Oct 2012
2:34PM
The second half is underway at the Stadium of Light.
I can’t see any changes from the 21 that finished the first half which is a surprise given how ineffective some of Sunderland’s midfield play has been.
21 Oct 2012
2:38PM
Sunderland have the first chance of the second half but Seb Larsson is unable to find a team-mate at the end of a decent run.
21 Oct 2012
2:43PM
From an Irish point of view today, it’s not great news.
John O’Shea could have done more for the Newcastle goal while James McClean has been virtually anonymous.
Indeed, it’s only when he is giving the ball away that he has actually caught the eye today.
21 Oct 2012
2:54PM
SUBSTITUTION: Saha for Sessegnon
Martin O’Neil has seen enough and decided to bring on some extra fire-power as Louis Saha replaces Stephane Sessegnon with 65 minutes gone.
21 Oct 2012
2:57PM
Sunderland are dominating possession but aren’t creating any chances with it.
There’s a panic about the home team in the final third and every cross seems to pick out a Newcastle shirt.
21 Oct 2012
3:01PM
Newcastle almost shoot themselves in the foot there by dropping a tame James McClean shot into a crowded penalty area.
However, as with so much today, it’s a Newcastle player that’s first to the ball and the chance filters out.
21 Oct 2012
3:05PM
It was end to end stuff there for a couple of minutes as Demba Ba first failed to extend Newcastle’s lead before Sunderland missed two chances in quick succession through Louis Saha and Craig Gardner.
It hasn’t been the best of games in terms of skill or excitement but the tempo has been ferocious and that has to count for something.
Doesn’t it?
21 Oct 2012
3:09PM
SUBSTITUTION: Taylor for Coloccini
Newcastle take off their best player and captain for a guy who earlier this week said he’d rather take up stamp-collecting than play for Sunderland.
Welcome to the game Steven Taylor.
21 Oct 2012
3:13PM
The home fans thought they’d scored but Louis Saha’s close range shot found the outside of the net.
SUBSTITUTIONS: David Johnson for Adam Vaughan (Sunderland) and Gabriel Obertan for Hatem Ben Arfa (Newcastle)
21 Oct 2012
3:15PM
GOAL: Demba Ba (OG), Sunderland, 85 mins
The ten men of Newcastle have finally capitulated after a John O’Shea flick on hits Demba Ba square in the head and he can’t help but turn the ball into his own net.
Can Sunderland push on for the win now?
21 Oct 2012
3:19PM
As we approach stoppage time, it’s all Sunderland now as James McClean’s shot drifts just wide of the Newcastle goal.
There will be a minimum of four minutes of injury time. Can someone find a winner?
21 Oct 2012
3:23PM
Sunderland are dominating the four minutes of injury time but they just can’t find a way through.
And that’s it, it’s all over at the Stadium of Light and both sides will feel they deserved more than the draw here.

Sunderland are dominating the four minutes of injury time but they just can’t find a way through.
And that’s it, it’s all over at the Stadium of Light and both sides will feel they deserved more than the draw here.
This game had everything you’d expect from a derby with skill at a premium but drama and intrigue in abundance.
Newcastle’s opener probably best summed up how wasteful Sunderland were when they had the ball, with Danny Rose giving it away before Cabaye pounced:
However, the sheer volume of possession the home side had means they probably deserved the good fortune that came with their equaliser.
And that’s it from the Stadium of Light for me.
The sending off definitely changed this game but very few could argue that it wasn’t a deserved red card.
